FFWG Pre-Congress Scholarship

SCB's Freshwater Working Group (FWWG) is offering assistance to five students (of any education level) to attend a one-day or half-day pre-congress workshop at International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB) in Cartagena, Colombia that will enhance their research skills or career opportunities.

Eligibility: Applicants must be registered and paid participants of ICCB 2017, and must be paid members of the Society for Conservation Biology.

Selection Criteria and Instructions: There are two primary selection criteria for awarding these funds, and we are unable to award to any more than five students. All interested students should email BOTH FFWG Vice President Sukh Mantel and FFWG President Steph Januchowski-Hartley with the completed application (link below) and a maximum of 150 words describing their motivation (based on career development and financial need) for seeking these funds. Note that priority is to support students who are from developing countries, and who are also studying in a developing country.

IMPORTANT: Save this document with your last name replacing ‘Name’ in the file’s name before emailing it to us.

DEADLINE EXTENSION: We've extended the deadline for email submissions to 2 May 2017 to correspond to the extended deadline for Early Bird Registration. Please note that if you require this application in an alternative format contact Steph Januchowski-Hartley.

Disbursement of funds: Award decisions will be made and approved by the FWWG Board in April. Winning applicants will be reimbursed the cost of their pre-congress short course/workshop after the Congress and upon submission of their report (see below: Reporting). Applicants will be reimbursed for one course only.

Please save your ICCB Registration Confirmation to use as a receipt for your reimbursement.

Awardees will be notified by 10 May 2017.

Reporting: No later than 1 month after ICCB 2017, awardees must provide the FWWG (via an email to FFWG Vice President  Sukh Mantel and FFWG President Steph Januchowski-Hartley) with a short write-up that can be shared on our Facebook Page to raise awareness about the student funding opportunities and to highlight what you took away from the workshop experience.

The write-up should be no more than a double-spaced, single page, and include: 1) a brief overview of the workshop, and what your participation brought to you and your research/career development, and 2) any interesting skills or tips that you learned, and something fun or interesting that you took from the experience.
